Ecosystem dynamics and export production in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific: A modeling study of impact of ENSO

چکیده
[1] Biogeochemical responses to physical changes associated with the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon are studied for the period of 1990–2001 using a physical-biogeochemical model. During warm ENSO, the ferricline deepens in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific, resulting in low biomass and low export production. Zooplankton and large phytoplankton are more depressed than small phytoplankton in particular during the 1997–98 El Niño. The recovery from the warm ENSO alleviated iron stress, resulting in an increase of phytoplankton growth. In addition to extra iron input, the mid-1998 blooms are also attributable to extremely low grazing pressure. The rapid turn to a cold ENSO in mid-1998 may enhance export production by a factor of eight in the Niño3 area. Large phytoplankton are largely responsible for the increase of export production in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific. Citation: Wang, X., J. R. Christian, R. Murtugudde, and A. J. 1. Purpose of the project: Previous modeling suggests that tuna productivity in the western and central Pacific Ocean is tied to upwelling along the equator in the central and eastern Pacific. This project proposes to test this hypothesis by combining diet analysis, stable isotopic analyses, and food-web modeling to study trophic-level variation and tuna movements in the equatorial Pacific. Our...
متن کاملDecadal changes of ENSO persistence barrier in SST and ocean heat content indices: 1958–2001
[1] Decadal changes of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) persistence barriers in various indices of sea surface temperature (SST) and ocean heat content (OHC) are examined in this study using observations and ocean data assimilation products for the period 1958–2001. It is found that the SST indices in the eastern and central equatorial Pacific exhibit very different decadal barrier variabili...

[1] In late boreal spring, especially May, a strong relationship exists in observations among precipitation anomalies over equatorial South America and the Atlantic intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), and eastern equatorial Pacific and central equatorial Atlantic sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTA). A chain of correlations of equatorial Pacific SSTA, western equatorial Atlantic wind str...
متن کاملEnvironmental change in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean: review of ENSO and decadal variability
Interannual variability of the physical environment in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean (ETP) and biological effects of this variability are reviewed and compared to variability in the northeastern Pacific. El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) scale variability of 2 to 7 yr periods is dominant in the eastern equatorial Pacific and decadal scale variability of 10 to 30 yr periods is dominant in...
متن کاملOn the Impact of Local Feedbacks in the Central Pacific on the ENSO Cycle
While sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the eastern equatorial Pacific are dominated by the thermocline feedback, in the central equatorial Pacific local wind effects, such as zonal advection, are important as well. El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) simulations with a linear model improve markedly if these effects are included as a local wind stress feedback on SST. An atmosphere mod...
